Family

Personality & Traits

General Overview : Lieutenant Juniper “Juno” Jones does not fit what most people conceptualize when they imagine the model Starfleet officer. At 29 years old, they are one of the youngest Chief Engineers in service. This fact often provokes curiosity, skepticism, and begrudging admiration from colleagues because Juno did not get where they are today by nepotism or misfortune. Simply put, they’ve earned it.

Often found standing in the middle of an engine room with a hyperspanner in one hand and a diagnostic tablet in the other, their uniform smeared with plasma grease; Juno does not often look like the poster child Starfleet officer. Looks can, however, be deceiving. The embodiment of many contradictions, Juno looks younger than they are. Preferring non-binary or male pronouns, Juno was assigned female at birth though does not identify as such. Although often sporting a disheveled appearance, Juno is thoroughly methodical and quite organized.

Juno’s loyalty is to their team of engineers and to the crew of the starship they serve on, but they are mistrusting of ‘the hierarchy’ of Starfleet Command and the Federation. Juniper’s sharp tongue and intellect make them an excellent sparring partner for debating Federation policies and galactic politics, but for the most part they will keep to themselves and stay clear of admiralty. Juno has been rumored to speak three languages: Federation Standard, sarcasm, and ‘angry EPS manifold,’ something they’ve found humorous.

Lieutenant Jones shows respect and admiration for the starship itself, especially the warp core which they refer to as ‘her ladyship.’ To them, starships often have a mind of their own and vibrant personalities. Juno views themselves as both caretaker and warrior by defending the ship against design and the occasional sabotage attempt from enemies.
Strengths & Weaknesses Strengths: Lieutenant Jones is generally considered a skilled engineer with an intuitive understanding of starship systems. Their strengths lie in being a rapid problem-solving individual, especially when under pressure to be innovative and depend on improvisation. Juno excels in crisis scenarios, often stabilizing critical systems with unconventional but effective solutions. They’re fiercely loyal to their crew and is reputable for being a strong advocate for their team and willfully shield junior personnel from top-down pressure. Their leadership style is unorthodox but inspiring, earning trust through action and technical brilliance rather than rank or formality. Juno’s dry wit, sharp observations, and blunt honesty cut through bureaucracy, keeping the mission and the engines on track. Though they resist rigid command structures, their ability to unify a team under high-stakes conditions makes them an irreplaceable officer in the field and a cornerstone of the starship.

Weakness: Juniper’s flaws are very real and authentic. It is well documented that they can be a sarcastic curmudgeon in the early morning hours and as bitter about an alpha shift assignment as the coffee that perks them up. They can be stubborn to a fault, unwilling to admit when they are in the wrong unless confronted with undeniable data forcing their hand. The lieutenant tends to work alone and can stray away from team cohesion if not checked. Additionally, they have a habit of pushing themselves past physical limits during a crisis. For all their brilliance, they sometimes forget that being a leader means sharing the burden.

Personal History Juniper Jones was born on the Federation world Benecia, a cultured and intellectual colony situated in the Alpha Quadrant known for its universities, libraries, and liberal arts institutions but lacking in the areas of sciences, technologies, and engineering. Raised by two academics, a historian and a composer, Juno grew up surrounded by music, performance, and lively debate. It was as though art and performance was their destiny.

Good thing for Juniper that they did not believe in destiny or fate. From a young age, they showed a deep respect for theatre and played multiple instruments, often performing in community ensembles or writing music for local productions but held a secret admiration for technology and engineering. Benecia's rich artistic atmosphere shaped Juno’s early identity, and for a time, they were set on attending the prestigious Aldebaran Music Academy.

However, that path changed when Juno, out of curiosity, began helping maintain lighting rigs and environmental systems for a theater troupe on the colony. What started as casual problem solving quickly grew into fascination and ignited their true passion. They became obsessed with the mechanics behind the scenes, the subtle beauty of circuits, energy flow, and kinetic systems. By seventeen, Juno had completely shifted focus from the stage to the machinery behind it, driven by an emerging love for engineering’s quiet, elegant precision.

Despite encouragement to pursue the arts, Juno applied to Starfleet Academy citing a desire to “build things that keep people alive, not just entertained.” Their application essay describing warp field harmonics as a kind of music was something unique and had caught the attention of the admissions committee. Accepted into the engineering track, Juno excelled in systems theory, warp mechanics, and field improvisation, even if their disregard for formality clashed with more traditional instructors. What set them apart was not just brilliance, but a rare instinct for understanding systems holistically akin them to melodies with purpose.

After graduating, Juniper Jones served in various junior roles aboard support vessels and survey ships. They quickly gained a reputation for unconventional but effective repairs. By 29, they were promoted to Chief Engineer and assigned to USS Hecate, an Excelsior-class starship. Though still unconventional, Juno has been able to find their place deep in the heart of the ship, keeping the music of the warp core alive.
